Research Labs for Teaching journalists

Deadline: 30/06/2010

RELATE – REsearch LAbs for TEaching journalists is a EU project aimed at organising training sessions for young journalists willing to launch their career in scientific topic. The participating journalists are sent for one week training in research laboratories around Europe. Journalists will experience staying in the lab next to scientists and have the chance to interview, talk and help them in spreading their research results. The final workshop for researchers, journalists, and EC officials exploring the project results at a high-level EU debate will be hold in Brussels in January 2011.

The final objective of the project is to bridge the gap between science and society. A total of 80 young journalists will have the chance to visit top research centres across Europe and then publish their findings. Scientists will be brought face to face with next generation journalists, producing valuable scientific articles and communication material ready to be distributed to media outlets, broadcasters, radio stations and online or paper based publications for the benefits of research.

The selected journalists will:
1. be sent on a week-long visit with other European students, with a reimbursement of expenses (up to 1.000,00 €, depending on location).
2. work as real science journalists: attending press conferences, interviewing researchers or filming lab work, with a view to produce unique communication material ready to be distributed.
3. be advised and supported by RELATE partners on the ways on pitching their work to newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, etc.
