The Poznan Department of the Polish Sociological Association is organising a conference about mobility in the contemporary world: “Social and spatial mobility in contemporary Central Europe”. It will take place on 23rd and 24th of September 2010, in Poznan.

Mobility is one of the crucial phenomena in the contemporary world. It influences a number of social processes, at both micro- and macro-structural level. Social mobility offers a wide variety of opportunities to improve one’s position in social stratification system by changing individuals’ social status. At a more general level, Social mobility touches the issues of social capital, the changing patterns of family life, or it stimulates a new range of intercultural contacts, cultural globalization, policy matters and international relations.

In the area of Central Europe mobility, besides the ‘old questions’ about limits of mobility behind the iron curtain, the mass mobility in recent years raises new issues connected with the European integration, labor market management, illegal migration, circular and permanent migration patterns among new EU member, in search for new chances of development.
