AstroMundus – Joint International Master Course in Astrophysics

Open to: Students of all nationalities with a Bachelor’s degree in (astro)physics, mathematics, or related fields
Scholarship: non-EEA nationals: 1000 €/month, EEA-nationals: 500 €/month, tution fee and travel/health insurance are covered.

AstroMundus is an international Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics that is funded by the European Commission within the Erasmus Mundus programme, 2nd Edition, Action 1. The Master course is open to students of all nationalities and is jointly offered by a consortium of 5 Universities in 4 different countries:

–the Institute of Astro- and Particle Physics, University of Innsbruck (Austria),
–the Department of Astronomy, University of Padova (Italy),
–the Astrophysics section of the Department of Physics, University of Rome ”Tor Vergata” (Italy),
–the Institute for Astrophysics, Faculty of Physics, University of Goettingen (Germany),
–the Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade (Serbia)

Applications are now solicited for the Masters Course starting in September 2012. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available both for non-European and European students. The selection of stuidents and assignment of scholarships are based on excellence.

Eligibility

Top-ranked students that either hold or are expected to obtain before August 2012 a Bachelor’s Degree (or an equivalent certified period of studies of at least 3 years, corresponding to 180 credits in the European Credit Transfer System) in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Mathematics or closely related fields are invited to apply.

A certified good knowledge of the English language is required.

The selected students will carry out their studies in at least 2 and up to 4 of the AstroMundus consortium universities and will be finally awarded a Joint Master Degree,
complemented with a Diploma Supplement, by all consortium universities they have
studied at.

Scholarship

A limited number of scholarships will be funded by the Erasmus Mundus 2009 – 2013 cooperation and mobility programme, under Action 1.

Applicants that wish to apply also for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship will have to state so in the application form. No additional application is required. Students that already received in the past an “Erasmus Mundus” scholarship are not eligible for a new one. Also, a student can apply for a maximum of 3 different Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses starting in the same academic year. Students that apply for more than 3 EM Courses will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

There are two categories of scholarships:

  • Category A: They are intended as full scholarships and are reserved to Third Country students. Category A scholarships cover the registration fees (including the insurance), include a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 8000 €, and a monthly allowance of 1000 €/month for the whole duration of the Masters Course (24 months).
  • Category B: They are intended as a financial contribution for European students or for students that have carried out their main activity in one of the European or associated countries for more than 12 months during the last 5 years. Category B scholarships cover the registration fees (including the insurance), include a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 3000 € (this contribution is provided only to students that will have a mobility period at the university of Belgrade), and a monthly allowance of 500 €/month for the whole duration of the Masters Course (24 months).

Not more than 2 students with the same nationality can be selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
