Description

The Global Development Awards and Medals Competition is an innovative award scheme launched by GDN with generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan, and other donors. Since its inception in 2000, GDN has awarded roughly US$ 2.2 million in research and travel grants to finalists and winners. Winners are chosen by an eminent jury at GDN’s Annual Conference; an event attended by over 500 practitioners in the field of development to whom the finalists present their proposals/papers.

The competition accepts applications in three categories:

  1. Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP)
  2. Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD)
  3. Medals for Research on Development (Medals)

Grant

Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is awarded to an organization/researcher(s) whose proposal to conduct research on any one of the three research themes (listed below) holds the greatest promise for improving our understanding of the relevant development issues and puts forth clear, articulate and well researched policy implications to address these development problems.

First Prize: US$ 30,000; Second Prize: US$ 5,000

Research proposals for this Award will be considered under the following three research themes only:

  1. The Interactive Economy and Urban Development
  2. Urban Externalities (Contagious Disease, Congestion and Crime) and Urban Poverty
  3. The Enabling Environment – Housing, Transportation and Infrastructure

Eligibility

To apply for a grant, applicants must fulfill following criteria:

  • Citizens and permanent residents of developing and transition countries
  • Citizens of developing and transition countries who are temporarily based in a developed country but not for more than five years
  • Applicant must be less than 45 years old as on 31 January, 2012
  • Finalists and winners from previous years are not eligible to apply with the same or similar research proposal
  • Winners from previous years cannot submit an application for the subsequent three years
