Description

The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. To achieve this mission, the Foundations seek to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, the Open Society Foundations implement a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, we build alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. The Foundations place a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities.

The Open Society Justice Initiative uses law to protect and empower people around the world. Through litigation, advocacy, research, and technical assistance, the Justice Initiative promotes human rights and builds legal capacity for open societies.

The Open Society Roma Initiatives, a group of coordinating, grantmaking, and operational programs within the Open Society Foundations, build upon the Foundations’ many years of support for Roma communities, and facilitate dialogue and exchange to enhance the grantmaking and knowledge of the Foundations’ programs that work with Roma communities.

Confronted with widespread prejudice and discrimination, marginalized Roma communities face a number of barriers that restrict both individuals’ and communities’ access to justice services when their rights are violated. Building on the positive experiences and results from the Justice Initiative’s community-based paralegals program, the Empowerment of Roma Communities program sets out to develop and institutionalize the work of community-based paralegals in Roma communities. Living and working in the communities they serve, community-based paralegals will use knowledge of the formal justice system, and alternative means of resolution such as mediation, and community-education practices, to support locals to resolve their justice problems and address underlying causes.

Based in Budapest, the Project Manager will work under the overall supervision of the Director of the Roma Initiatives and in close partnership with the Project Manager of the Legal Empowerment Program at the Open Society Justice Initiative.
