The CIVICUS Youth Assembly

The CIVICUS Youth Assembly is a unique opportunity for young people to meet and work with other World Assembly delegates who are really making changes that matter. It aims to bring together the world’s most engaged, dynamic young activists in the fields of social and civic justice.

The overarching objectives of the CIVICUS Youth Assembly are:

  • To promote youth participation within the World Assembly;
  • To act as a platform for networking and collaboration amongst youth;
  • To collaboratively express youth opinions and perspectives on World Assembly topics and issues;
  • To strengthen youth engagement in CIVICUS work.

Underpinning these objectives is the fact that the Youth Assembly should not be seen as a separate event to the World Assembly, but as a forum leading up to the World Assembly. CIVICUS and Institut du Nouveau Monde are offering 15 bursaries to committed young people so they can take part in the CIVICUS World Assembly, which will be held from 3-7 September 2012, in Montreal, Canada.

Eligibility

The 15 bursary recipients will be selected on the basis of their active commitment towards their community and society at the local, national, regional, and/or global level, the reality of their financial needs, and their motivation in getting involved in the 2012 CIVICUS World Assembly.

Required qualities:

  • Be 30 years old or less before 3 September 2012;
  • Personally committed or committed through an organisation to promote social justice;
  • Share CIVICUS values and show an understanding of the objectives of both the World and Youth Assemblies;
  • Be ready to support the World Assembly team and its influence before, during, and after the event;
  • Multilingual abilities are an asset (French, English, and Spanish);
  • The ability and availability to support our team of whisper translators or our team of session rapporteurs is also an asset.

Venue

The CIVICUS Youth Assembly will take place on 3-7 September 2012, in Montreal, Canada.

Each bursary covers:

  • registration fees and participation in the Youth Assembly on 3 and 4 September, in the preconference on 4 September, and in the World Assembly from 5 to 7 September 2012;
  • airfare in economy class (from the closest international airport to the departure city to Montreal);
  • cost of a Canadian entry visa, if needed ($75);
  • accommodation in Montreal from 2 to 7 September;
  • 150$ per diem allowance for all other expenses.

In return for CIVICUS and Institut du Nouveau Monde financing his or her participation, each selected bursary recipient will have to commit to helping the World Assembly team in the following manner:

  • Write a blog article per month for CIVICUS World Assembly blog, from May to August 2012; an article during the Youth Assembly; one during the World Assembly; and a last article after the end of the event (The articles will be published on the World Assembly blog and are subject to revision and validation by the World Assembly team.);
  • Write a short participation report to be published on the World Assembly website and in donor reports;
  • Become an ambassador for the event by promoting the World Assembly throughout their network (via Facebook, Twitter, email, or during other youth events);
  • Other forms of contribution are welcome!

Application

Submit your application by sending an email entitled APPLICATION – YOUTH BURSARY to the following address: worldassembly@civicus.org. Please make sure you include:

  • A Word document containing precise answers to these 3 questions:
    1. We are looking for active and committed young people. Present yourself in 100 words.
    2. Give 3 concrete examples reflecting what your contribution to the Youth and World Assemblies would be.
    3. In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge facing humanity, and how would you like to help in finding a solution? What change(s) is/are needed from the system? From you?
  • A CV listing your involvement in your community and/or organisation;
  • A video, written message, or photo picturing you about social justice that we could publish to incite young people to take part in the World Assembly;
  • You have another idea? Any other creative means of supporting your application is welcome!

Incomplete applications or applications submitted after this date will not be considered. Spanish, French, and English applications are accepted.

The World Assembly team will contact the selected candidates within a month after the end of the call for applications.
