Description
Four peacemakers are selected each year to participate in an eight-week residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ), located on the University of San Diego campus in San Diego, California. The program pairs each peacemaker with a Peace Writer and a documentary film team to document her story and best practices. Selected candidates give presentations on their work both at the IPJ and in the San Diego community and have opportunities to exchange ideas and approaches to peacemaking and justice, increasing their capacity to participate in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts and in post-conflict decision-making.
Eligibility
This is a program open to women who have been involved in either official or unofficial peace processes and who may be working at the grassroots, national or international level. We select women who have been active in efforts to secure a just peace, namely, through conflict resolution and civil society participation that is inclusive and honors human rights. Women PeaceMakers must:
- Have experience working directly in peacemaking and/or human rights efforts at a grassroots, national or international level.
- Speak sufficient English to relate personal experiences. Written English is not necessary.
- Be in a position to apply what is learned and/or to share with others at the conclusion of the residency program.
Programe
Women PeaceMakers share their experiences of peacemaking and human rights advocacy with the local community through classroom presentations, visits to local governmental and nongovernmental organizations, small group discussions and other public engagements. Each Woman PeaceMaker participates in a formal presentation, in which her individual story is highlighted, as well as a group panel discussion. These talks are open to the general public.
The program seeks to create a space for peacemakers to renew personal commitments to their work and to take time to reflect in a safe and nurturing environment that promotes new learning and an authentic exchange of ideas.
There is no cost for participation in the Women PeaceMakers Program. Airfare, visa expenses, lodging and health insurance are covered by the program. Peacemakers receive a stipend during their residency to cover living expenses and incidentals.
Housing is provided at the Casa de la Paz, “The House of Peace,” on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Casa de la Paz is a private residence adjacent to the Institute for Peace & Justice that overlooks Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Invited Women PeaceMakers have the opportunity to rest and reflect in this beautiful, peaceful and supportive setting.

In order for your application to be considered it must be post-marked on or before May 15, 2012 and received by May 19, 2012. Applicants selected for consideration will be notified by June 1, 2012; successful candidates will be notified by June 15, 2012.
All applications must include:
- The completed and signed 2012 Application Form. (2-page form included here)
- A two-part statement, in a maximum of 8 pages, that explains your personal objectives and gives an outline of your story. This should include:
- An explanation of why you are interested in participating in the 2010 Women PeaceMakers Program. Incorporate your personal goals with your understanding of how this unique program can benefit your work. (No more than 4 pages.)
- A summary of your own peacemaking story. (No more than 4 pages.)
Note: You may substitute a videotape (maximum of 10 minutes) in which you provide the information requested in a and b above.
- A resume, curriculum vitae or listing of your peacemaking and work activities and educational background. There are no educational requirements for this program, but we would like to know about your formal as well as informal education. (No more than 3 pages.)
- Two letters of reference with contact information should be provided in the 2012 Application Cover Form.
