Description

The artists’ residence Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems is an institution incorporated in the Stiftung Rheinland-Pfalz für Kultur (Foundation for Culture, Rhineland-Palatinate), from where it receives its funding. It is a place for artistic production, meeting and discussion. Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral has seen various work projects including the disciplines of painting, graphic design, sculpture, installation, photography, video and the new media. National and international visual artists are sponsored through the award of artist-in-residence scholarships and project, foreign and exchange scholarships. This year, it awards scholarships for visual artists.

Eligibility

The conditions for all scholarships with the exception of the curator scholarship are a completed course of study in art (M.F.A. or comparable degree) and two or three years (depending on the respective scholarship) of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of the studies. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes.
To foster artistic dialog and interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge of German, English or French is expected.

Scholarship

Balmoral awards two 3-month and seven 6-month residential scholarships to international visual artists.

International residence scholarships
Six residence scholarships will be awarded to international visual artists.
Each scholarship lasts six months. They ordinarily begin in April 2013 and are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month. They include free accommodation at the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.

Project scholarship
The project scholarship, which is not tied to any site, will be awarded to an international visual artist. The project scholarship lasts for 6 months and begins in April 2013. It is endowed with 1,200 EUR per month.
Eligible are international applicants with permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany. The artistic project should be realized within the scholarship period of 6 months so that it can possibly be integrated in the annual exhibition of the scholarship holders.

Foreign and exchange scholarships exclusively for artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate
Relation to Rhineland-Palatinate means is born in, has studied in, has lived or lives in Rhineland-Palatinate.

• One six-month scholarship for New York (Flux Factory)
• One three-month scholarship for South Korea
• One six-month scholarship for the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (July to December)
• One five-month scholarship for Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg/Germany

The foreign and exchange scholarships are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month.
A jury of specialists will award all scholarships, taking into consideration the developmental potential of the applicant’s artistic or theoretical work. For more information about the international scholarships, go here.

Application

For all scholarships offered the following documents – no originals! – have to be submitted by mail in German, English or French:

– CV including your artistic career history and previous grants
– Passport photo (for application form)
– Statement of reasons why you have chosen this scholarship and an illustration of your objectives during your intended residence (maximum one A4 page)
– At least 10, but not more than 20 photos or other images of your artistic works (no slides, no photo CDs, no MAC data CDs), max A4 size
– Explanations to the submitted works, altogether one A4 page maximum (optional)
– At most three exhibition catalogues (collective catalogues only if your works cannot be presented in a different way)
– At most three video cassettes (VHS) or DVDs, each recording no longer than 15 min.

The application materials should not exceed a total weight of 2 kg incl. packing. The Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral is not responsible for submitted application material.
