Annual William Faulkner Literary Competition

Description

Union County and New Albany are unique in storytelling and writing, having deep roots in the red clay soil that wellsprings so much life. William Faulkner’s birth there in 1897 was not the beginning or the end of that creative aspect these regions unique culture; his body of work provides a unique perspective and honors which resonates throughout the world.
The Tallahatchie Riverfest honors the life and work of William Faulkner and therefor invites every adult writer internationally to join in a competition with a hope to join  in the festival’s celebration of the written word and the telling of the tale. Write your short story, and/or one-act play and join in this celebration of the artist’s aim.

Competition Guidelines

About the short stories competition

  1. The competition is open to original, unpublished short fiction with no more than 5,000 words. Judging is blind. Judges outside of Union County will evaluate the Short Story competition. The judges will not have access to the cover sheets, so the student will remain anonymous. Winners will receive a monetary award. First prize receives $600, second prize receives $300 and third prize is $200. Deadline for entry is postmarked by August 31, 2012
  2. The entry fee is $10 per work. You may enter one short story or more, but all work must be entered at the same time. You may send one check for one entry or a batch of entries. Entries received without an entry fee will be disqualified.
  3. All entries must be typed on one side of 8 ½ x 11-inch white paper in 12 pt. font and a digital copy as a pdf file on a disk or flash drive. Short stories will not be returned so keep a copy for your records.
  4. All entries must be in English, original, RiverFest Literary Committee reserves the one-time publication rights for winning entries, after which publication rights revert to the writer.
  5. Winners will be recognized and prizes awarded at the literary festival luncheon in New Albany, Mississippi, Friday, September 21, 2012.
  6. Applicants need to send their submissions copies along with one cover sheet and the entry fee for each submission to the following address:

About the playwright competition

  1. The Tallahatchie RiverFest will incorporate one act playwriting into the literary competition of  the festival. First place carries an award of $600, second place $300, and third place $200.
  2. The deadline for entries is the same: August 31, 2012. No script will be accepted postage due. Send original unpublished one act play and four copies of manuscript on a disk or flash drive as a pdf file. The original copy must include a cover page with title, name, address, and phone number for notifying winners. Additional copies should include only the title of the entry. Lost, misplaced, or misdirected entries are not the responsibility of the sponsor. No script will be returned and only winners will be notified.
  3. Open auditions for casting in the selected entry/entries play will begin in August and rehearsals will begin in September. By submitting an entry, the playwright is granting the right for the Tallahatchie River Players to perform the selected entry/entries four times, royalty-free. TRP reserves the right to minor editing privileges, and the right to disqualify any entry.
  4. The Tallahatchie River Players will produce the selected entry/entries on Saturday, September 22 at 2 p.m. during the annual RiverFest of the 2011 winners. The 2012 winners will be produced in 2013. The play will be free to the public in the Magnolia Civic Center in Historic Downtown New Albany
  5. The playwright competition is open to all ages. The fee is $10 per entry; Length: One Act, Less than One Hour, typed in 12 pt. Font
