Summer 2012m“Balkans today, new perspectives, new challenges”

• Meeting each other – Sharing experiences – To build a better world in diversity Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly network organizes its 21st SIDU in Fojnica, Bosna i Herzegovina from August the 24th to August the 30th. The 2012 SIDU is devoted to experiences exchange and cooperation’s proposal between youngster’s organizations in the region.

• What is the SIDU?SIDU, Seminar for International Dialogue and mutual Understanding, brings together young activists involved in citizen’s movement about human rights, democracy and conflict resolution. SIDUs are meetings for intercultural, inter ethnic and interfaith dialogue.

They are organized by Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly (HCA) that assembles, in twenty countries, groups, individuals and organizations dedicated to peace, democracy and Human rights.

What it is about?

What it serves to you to get together?” When a young student asked Miralem Tursinovic about SIDUs in Corte, Corsica, during a SIDU in 2000, he answered : “Friendship first, experience then, at last ideas.

SIDUs are not meetings where experts come to educate young ignorant, where participants are divided between teachers and students, but they are place for each participant to contribute with their own means. The exchange is in the heart of the meeting, the confrontation of one well known situation, with a comparable situation, but which was developed in an other context, the need to explain to the others, the interest to listen the others, the pleasure of being together.

During these meetings, beyond friendship, new links are created and give birth to concrete activities of solidarity.

From one SIDU to an other a new “way to see” is built, a network is built, which is active on the long-term in civil society from each country.• SIDU 2012 This year the 2012 SIDU will take place in Fojnica, Bosna I Herzegovina from August the 24th to August the 30thThe goal of this meeting is to strengthen relationships between young organizations of the region.

The 2012 SIDU is organized by Youth Resource Center (ORC) from Tuzla, member of HCA network since 1995, created to strengthen youngsters involvement in protection of minorities, border cooperation, etc., and the European Citizen Assembly (HCA France) which co-organized most of last SIDU.

These 5 days will be the opportunity for exchange regarding the different situations of each country, difficulties which activists have to cope with and actions develop to overcome these difficulties.

The methods that we will use aim to reinforce intercultural debates trough various activities such as lectures, interactive workshops, role-playing, self-organized sessions, etc., about cross border cooperation and activities, and common actions.

The 2012 SIDU will be the opportunity to develop common actions and to propose new activities. It will also be the occasion to contribute to the preparation of the World Social Forum for Peace, prevention and resolution of conflicts and the right to human security, planned in Sarajevo in 2014.

    1. It probably means to indicate if you have had any experience in organizations/NGOs, if you have volunteered for something; been on youth exchange; or similar events etc and to describe the project you have been working/volunteering on.

  1. Drasko:I think that we are seeing is a grudaal withdrawl of US foreign policy from the Balkans, precipitated by the critical situations in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. I think Rice would like Europe to take over the whole mess, but that won’t be simple now that Russia is reasserting its sphere of influence in the region again. That means the other big mess, the rift between Russia and the rest of Europe has to be mended first. This will take a great deal of diplomacy, something that seems in short supply. Europe is in a very dangerous position akin to 1930’s in many ways, and I worry that some bad decisions will be made that will have significant ramifications.
