Description

The House of Representatives Study Foundation was established by the Parliament of Berlin in 1994 as a late sign of gratitude to the Allied Forces who occupied, befriended, and protected Berlin and its citizens for almost fifty years after the end of World War II. Because of the impending loss of social and cultural contact that would inevitably occur after the withdrawal of the Allies, the representatives of Berlin created the Study Foundation  to sustain and develop contact with France, Great Britain, the United States, Russia and other successor states of former Soviet Union.

Presently, the Study Foundation is awarding twelve-month grants to students twenty years and older with a stipend in the amount of €770 for pre-doctoral students (with at least a bachelor’s degree) and €1.300 for post-doctoral students. In addition, the foundation shall assume round-trip travel costs as well as rental costs while living at the International Study Center in Berlin.

During their twelve month stay in Berlin, grant winners will not only be offered the opportunity to experience their disciplines from an international perspective, but they will also be encouraged to learn more about the people and culture of Berlin.

Eligibility

The Foundation of the House of Representatives is a scholarship program for young researchers from the the former Soviet Union, the United States, Britain, and Francewho desire either to work in Berlin on German and international issues or to use their research facilities. Their main target groups include the humanities and the social sciences, but they remain open to other disciplines as well. The grants shall be awarded to applicants who clearly demonstrate above-average academic qualifications.

Selection criteria include:

  • Coursework, exam results and special demonstrate scientific knowledge
  • scientific quality and feasibility of the project
  • technical expertise of professors
  • admission to a university and contact between the home and host institution
  • adequate knowledge of German

Applicants for a scholarship from the Scholarship Foundation of the House must belong to the top group of younger scholars in their country. The maximum age is thirty-five among scientists in general. The Foundation expects that the applicants submit with the application a detailed research plan. They must also have already endeavored to obtain confirmation of support from a university teacher and a conductor of a scientific research institute in Berlin. This commitment should be submitted with the application materials.

Application

The below-mentioned documents must accompany the application forms AVAILABLE HERE, which must be submitted in German:

  • CV with a recent photo on the cover
  • detailed and precise description of the study and research project as well as any previous study and research needed for the decision of particular importance
  • Evidence of existing contacts with Berlin academics and research institutions (copy of Correspondence)
  • 2 opinions of specialist teachers who provide information about the academic qualifications of the applicant information. The letter should indicate the position of the appraiser.
  • Language certificate AVAILABLE HERE

The application must also include copies of academic certificates, namely:

  • School-leaving certificate, which in their home country for higher education entitled (with individual grades)
  • all university end of year exam (with individual grades) or students all graded certificate
  • diploma – or university certificate indicating the final grade

All certificates must attach an explanation of the grading system. Candidates from the successor states of the Soviet Union must submit their certificate copies in German or English translation. More information about application is available on this website.
