Youthful Cities is a global social initiative that ranks the top 100 cities from a youth perspective then inspires new ways to engage millions of young people and civic leaders to live, work and play.

Cities are definitely full of youth (we make up 50 per cent of their population and growing), BUT are they “youthful”? – that’s a whole other question – one that they’re revving up to find out. They have our minds set on ranking the world’s top 100 cities from a youthful perspective. Ambitious? Crazy, perhaps? YES! But so are most things that have never been done before. Are you just as curious as Youthful Cities is to discover the best (and worst) places around the globe to live, work and play? If the answer is yes, theyinvite you to explore their website HERE. URBAN DECODERS WANTED: Passionate about your city and making it a better place to live for young people? Curious to know how your city stands-up internationally from a youth perspective? Want to join a global network of people to take on this challenge on the local level? If so, read on.

YOUTHFUL CITIES is a huge, complicated, exciting, global, social venture. They’re seeking Urban Decoders across the globe to help launch the initiative. It’s initially a 6-month commitment at 3 days a week. As the local on-the-ground point person and lead representative for your city, you will be responsible for:

  •  Building, Managing, Developing relationships on the local level
  •  Liaising with a global network of 24 other Urban Decoders
  •  Providing valuable insight in framing, forming and directing the initiative
  •  Participating in finalizing the YouthfulCities Indicators that measure a city’s youthfulness
  •  Managing the coordination and collection of Youthful City data
  •  Documenting the process & collecting stories of what youth want in their cities (there’s room to get creative)
  •  Hosting local events
  •  Finding organizations, businesses, agencies that are youth friendly
  •  Participating in a global summit of your finding

URBAN DECODER ATTRIBUTES:  They are looking for a youthful person who can really get things done:

  • Connected, Dynamic and Extroverted – You will need to find and meet lots of people so you better love being socially connected
  • Tech savvy – fear of technology won’t cut it because there will be lots at the centre of the venture
  • Curious, Resourceful and Resilient – someone with tricks up their sleeve to meet the challenge of collecting the data for the indicators
  • Creative flexible problem solver – always critical in start-ups to be able to find new and better directions
  • Thoughtful – Not all information is created equally. They need a great analyst and cultural translator
  • Culturally Empathetic – It’s a global project and they need to act like it all the time
  • Super Organized – archiving knowledge, sorting contacts…you name it

Eligibility

They are looking to recruit 25 Urban Decoders, one from each of the following cities:

Sao Paulo, Bogota, Lima, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Houston, London, Paris, Moscow, Berlin, Istanbul, Shanghai, Mumbai, Manila, Seoul, Tokyo, Cairo, Lagos, Johannesburg, Kinshasa and Nairobi.

  • Candidate must live in the metropolitan borders of the city
  • Real fluency in English/written and verbal + city’s language a must
  • Daily reliable access to internet & a reliable power source
  • Daily access to a computer
  • Required software Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PPT, Word.
  • Post-Secondary requirements preferred, but exceptional experience accepted
  • Great connections to your city and beyond

All applications should include a recent copy of your CV & letter that answers the following questions. Please stick to the word limit, short and sweet.

  1.  Propose 3 measurable indicators that you think make a city youthful and propose how you would go about collecting the data (Maximum100 words)
  2. A pivotal part of this position is making partnerships and spreading the word about YouthfulCities. Which three organizations, people or companies would you reach out to first and why? (Maximum 100 words)
  3. Based on the job description, why are you the best candidate for the position? And what relevant experience do you have to make the launch a success in your city? (Maximum 100 words)
  4. What excites you most about the potential of the YouthfulCities initiative from your city’s perspective? (Maximum100 words)
