Description

The Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies has once again been successful in the German “Excellence Initiative”. It has as its aim the supervision of exceptional dissertation projects in the field of Literary Studies, examining European, American, Arabic and Asian literary texts, within the doctoral degree programme “Literary Studies”. The projects should be well grounded in theory and should adopt a historical and / or an inter- or transcultural approach. The programme offers intensive and individual supervision of the thesis as well as coursework.

Doctoral candidates take part in activities which support them in their research within their individual disciplines, at the same time placing this research in an interdisciplinary context. These activities include:

  • Research colloquia with renowned visiting academics
  • Seminars on methodology and literary theory
  • Courses and workshops in the field of transferable skills

The Graduate School will award:

  1. up to 10 scholarships for doctoral candidates per year. Scholarships are awarded for amaximum duration of three years.
  2. up to 2 scholarships for postdoctoral researchers per year. Scholarships are awarded for a maximum duration of two years.

Eligibility

Applicants for the program should:

  • submit an application showing that their dissertation project is innovative, elaborated and well-grounded in theory;
  • have a University Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the humanities, ideally in the field of literary studies;
  • have been continuously working in a field that is relevant for the dissertation project, if more than two years have elapsed since their leaving the university
  • be able to read foreign languages other than English and German that may be relevant for their dissertation project;
  • have work or study experience, ideally abroad, that may be relevant for their dissertation project;
  • be of an age still allowing a career as a junior academic at a university or a non-university research institution;
  • not have received any other funding for their current dissertation project from public sources or foundations.

  • an outline of the dissertation project (8–10 pages);
  • curriculum vitae;
  • an outline of experience
  • a list of qualifications relevant for the graduate programme (in German or English);
  • a personal statement, giving the reasons for applying; certified copies of all degrees acquired;
  • a sample of your academic work (e.g. a chapter of a Master’s thesis,15-20 pages); two letters of recommendation;
  • language certificates proving your advanced knowledge of German and English.
