Deadline: 1 March 2013
Open to: young people between 17 and 26 of who have permanently lived in the EU, the GUS or Turkey
Grant: €550 for Germans to travel elsewhere and other Europeans to travel to Germany; OR a €422 InterRail Global Pass for 30 European countries, including Turkey

Description

The Schwarzkopf Foundation offers two types of travel grants to enable young people to undertake field trips investigating political and cultural developments in neighbouring European countries.

The Schwarzkopf Foundation’s classic travel grant, for which people aged 18 to 26 can receive travel cost expenses of up to €550.

With its travel grants the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe offers young people the chance to get to know European neighbours as well as to face current cultural or political developments of the respective country. It is important that these developments have to be seen in context of the guest countries’ relations with the EU. This way the Foundation wants to make a contribution towards a better understanding among European people and for the idea of a united Europe.

The applicants can freely choose the country they wish to travel to. The person is expected to have a certain subject matter for the stay. The application has to give information on how the required information to this subject will be acquired in the travel country. The trip has to be planned and carried out exclusively by the recipient and last a minimum of three to a maximum of six weeks. The recipient should have elementary knowledge of the country’s language to make the trip meaningful.

The stipendiary has to submit a detailed report of at least 10 pages to the Schwarzkopf Foundation no later than three months after the end of the travel. It has to contain the acquired knowledge and experience. The subject matter has to be stated in the application and can only be changed in agreement with the Schwarzkopf Foundation. Invoices proving residence in the travel country will have to be enclosed to the report. An outstanding report will be awarded with a cash price. The travel grant is for €550. €400  will be paid with the start of the travel and the other €150 after submission and examination of the report.

In the second type of travel grant the Schwarzkopf Foundation, in cooperation with the German Railways (Deutsche Bahn), offers people aged 17 to 25 the chance to be given an InterRail Global Pass ticket, worth €422, in order to visit neighbouring European Countries.

Similar to its classical travel grants the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe offers young people the chance to get to know their European neighbours as well as to become aware of current cultural or political developments there. It is important that these developments are seen in the context of the guest countries’ relations with the EU.

The travel grant includes an InterRail-Global Pass for 30 European countries, including Turkey, equivalent to €422.

The applicants freely choose the countries they wish to travel to. The trip needs to have a specifically defined research topic regarding a current cultural or political development in the context of European integration which needs to be explained and elaborated in the application. The applicant should also state what methods are envisaged to address the topic (e.g. interviews, etc…). A later substantial change of the topic would need to be approved by the Foundation.

Not later than three months after the journey the stipendiary is requested to submit a detailed report of at least 10 pages. The report needs to explain how the research topic was addressed, the concrete findings and a reflection on the experiences and impressions from the trip. The stipendiary agrees with the publication of the report by the Foundation.

The trip has to be planned and carried out exclusively by the recipient and needs to last a minimum of three and a maximum of six weeks.
