Starting August 1, 2013 Humboldt‐Universität zu Berlin is offering eight fellowships for post‐doctoral researchers. The fellowships are funded by the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Initiative and will be awarded for up to 36 months.

Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowships are geared towards outstanding young researchers who wish to conduct a postdoctoral research project at Humboldt‐Universität zu Berlin. The call is aimed at researchers who have completed an outstanding PhD project and have international research experience. In order to be considered for the fellowship researchers are required to submit a proposal for an excellent and original project they plan to conduct during their stay at Humboldt‐Universität. The proposed project should fit well with the research structure at Humboldt‐Universität.

Young researchers from all disciplines are invited to submit applications. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievements, their postdoctoral project proposal, and their international network of contacts. The search committee is comprised of professors, post‐docs, and doctoral students from a variety of disciplines.

The Postdoctoral Fellowships funding line facilitates the transition from the postdoctoral phase to a professorship. This funding line offers up to three-year postdoctoral positions at Humboldt-Universität to outstanding young researchers who have recently completed their PhD. During this time, the postdoctoral fellows have the opportunity to extend and refine their academic profile. They conduct a research project of high academic quality and originality in cooperation with partners at Humboldt-Universität and, where relevant, their non-university partners.

Candidates selected for Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowships are temporarily employed as research assistants at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, in accordance with the pay scale specified in E 13 TV-L HU. The specific pay grade within salary group 13 you are assigned to depends on the length of your previous employment in the public sector. The Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship – in contrast to a scholarship, for example – provides you with pension, long-term care and unemployment insurance, but you are also required to pay taxes. You can find some information on the public sector pay scale under HEREDepending on your previous experience you can expect a salary of at least 3430 Euro per month.

Eligibility

The Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship funding line is aimed at outstanding young researchers from Germany and abroad who plan to pursue an academic career/a professorship and would like to carry out a postdoctoral research project at Humboldt-Universität to develop their academic profile. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievements, their postdoctoral project proposal and their international network of contacts. Half of the fellowships are awarded to women.

Application

Applications deadline is 5 April 2013. The positions are temporary with a maximum duration of three years (funding begins on 1 August). You will need to submit the following documents:

  1. Standard application form, including a project description, CV and list of publications
  2. Description of the research project to be conducted during the fellowship, including information on the candidate’s academic objectives (maximum of two pages)
  3. Letter of recommendation from the candidate’s PhD supervisor
  4. Statement by the host institute/department
  5. Copy of the candidate’s PhD thesis and one major publication from the last two years (articles, lectures, papers, book chapters)
  6. The host institute/department should inform the dean of the relevant faculty about the application.
