The tools for instant, global, visual communication now fit in your backpack: a video camera, laptop, editing software and hard drive. The era of the backpack video journalist is here. It is revolutionizing the worldwide exchange of information and ideas – and changing the way we live.

The Thomas Reuters Foundation is organizing this five-day intensive programme, which teaches the full range of skills required for effective visual storytelling – from idea development and pitching to shooting, producing, scriptwriting, narrating and editing. It will teach you to produce powerful TV and web productions. Information is power, and this programme helps you harness that power to document and to change the world.

The programme runs from 23 to 27 September 2013 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Costs

Fully-funded bursaries are available for this course for journalists from the developing world/countries in political transition working for organisations with no resources for training. Bursary to include economy air travel, accommodation and a small daily allowance (please note Thomson Reuters Foundation does not cover any visa costs).

Eligibility

This programme is open to journalists from the Caucasus region who have a minimum of two years working experience as a journalist. It helps if you have previous experience and some facility with cameras but this is not a requirement. To get the full benefit from this programme it is helpful to use your own equipment. You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in your country and have a good level in spoken and written English.

Application

The application deadline is 1 August 2013. You must complete the online registration form HERE and submit the following documents:

  1. a short biography of no more than 250 words
  2. a statement detailing your work and what you hope to gain from the course
  3. a recent example of your published work.
