Erasmus Mundus European Wind Energy Master

Deadline: 1 December 2013
Open to: candidates who have obtained a BSc diploma of substantial quality and level corresponding to at least 3 years studies at university
Scholarship: tuition and fees, plus travel allowance and monthly allowance

Description

The EWEM- European Wind Energy Master aims to educate 120-150 MSc graduates per year, covering the top 1-2% global demand of Wind Energy professionals with post-graduate education.

EWEM is an advanced MSc for elite cohorts of students, with four specializations that follow the energy conversion chain:

  1. Wind Physics
  2. Rotor Design
  3. Electric Power Systems
  4. Offshore Engineering

EWEM is a 2 year (120 ECTS) master course. The joint first semester and the specific multi-disciplinary and project-oriented teaching will give the student the ability to transfer knowledge and competences beyond his/her specialisation and to embed design choices in a sociotechnical context. The student acquires knowledge in theoretical and applied sciences underlying wind energy systems, and specific competencies necessary to operate in the chosen area of specialization.

The European Wind Energy Master consortium is composed of four Universities, world leaders in Wind Energy and Offshore Wind Energy research and education:

  1. Delft University of Technology (coordinator)
  2. Technical University of Denmark
  3. Norwegian University of Science and Technology
  4. Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg

The EWEM prepares graduates for a career in research, both in industry and in academia, and is closely linked to the partners’ research, in particular the large Wind Energy PhD cohort of the four partner universities, of over 130 PhD students.

Eligibility

Candidates must have obtained a BSc diploma of substantial quality and level corresponding to at least 3 years studies at University, equivalent to 180 ECTS. The programme builds upon a first degree such as a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in a related field. The four tracks have different degree requirements.

  • For the Rotor Design track applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in either Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or a degree with equivalent core content.
  • For the Wind Physics track applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in either Mechanical engineering, Aerospace engineering, Mathematics or Physics or a degree with equivalent core content.
  • For the Electrical Power Systems track applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering, Physics or a degree with equivalent core content.
  • For the Offshore Engineering track applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in either Civil engineering, Structural engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Physics or a degree with equivalent core content.

Proof of English language proficiency is mandatory (certificates older than two years are not accepted). The applicant’s qualifications must include a strong working knowledge of mathematics and experience in programming.

Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus Programme, which sponsors the EWEM programme, offers scholarships for students. Please also visit the Erasmus Mundus website for detailed regulations of eligibility and frequently asked questions.

There are two categories of scholarship:

Category B students are from the 28 EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway. Tuition fee and insurance is fully covered by the EWEM consortium and the Erasmus Mundus. The contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs is € 3 000, only if the study period includes a mobility period to a third country full/associated partner. They also receive a monthly allowance of €500 per month.

Category A students are from any other country, provided they are not currently residents of these eligible countries (above), nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries. Tuition fee and insurance is fully covered by the EWEM consortium and the Erasmus Mundus. The contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs is € 8,000, and they also receive a monthly allowance of €1000 per month.
