Model International Criminal Court in Poland

Deadline: 1 December 2013
Open to: Students of law, international relations and journalism or students with journalistic background
Venue: 26 – 31 March 2014 in Krzyżowa, Poland

Description

Since 2006, MICC University once a year invites university students from all over the world to Krzyżowa. MICC University simulates a fictional case dealing with current dilemmas of international criminal law. The next MICC will be held on 26 – 31 March 2014 in Krzyżowa, Poland.

The aim and idea is to promote knowledge about humanitarian law and human rights protection on a university level, especially in those countries where international law is not or only rarely part of university curricula.

The core of the project is the simulation itself. For five days, students get the opportunity to learn, train and discuss the issues surrounding the case at hand with professors, trainers, and other professionals in the field. All this happens in an international environment.

A total of 50 students will be admitted to the project. Once groups are accepted to the program, the students are divided into teams and mixed with students from other universities and nationalities. This way we foster intercultural dialogue among the participants. The teams are assigned individual tasks and roles (judges, defence, and prosecution) and asked to prepare and submit preliminary papers with their pleadings/judgements. Each team of three students has a total of 45 minutes to argue their case.

Eligibility

Students of law/ international relations and journalism or students with journalistic background can register for MICC University. For the simulation, teams of four students can register from one university. The final selection of participating teams will be made on the basis of the CVs and letters of motivation submitted. The student teams should be legally advised and coordinated by a professor from their home university.
