Description

The Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) provides combined research expertise for the personal and professional development of the next generation of arts and humanities doctoral researchers. Through the partnership, participant universities aim to deliver excellence in all aspects of research supervision and training. They will assist researchers in acquiring the best supervision for their field of research, and they will have access to a wide range of facilities and support networks across the universities campuses.

The Midlands3Cities (M3C) Doctoral Training Partnership will be awarding 410 PhD studentships over a five year period to excellent research students in the arts and humanities funded by the AHRC. The DTP, a collaboration between the universities of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Leicester, De Montfort, Birmingham and Birmingham City, provides research candidates with cross-institutional mentoring, expert supervision including cross-institutional supervision where appropriate, subject  specific and generic  training, and professional support in preparing for a career.

The University of Nottingham School of Cultures Languages and Area Studies is inviting applications from students whose research interests include:

  • Russian, Slavonic & Eastern European Language & Culture
  • Film and Television Studies
  • Cultural Studies and Critical Theory
  • American and Canadian Studies
  • Comparative Literature
  • French Language & Culture
  • German Language & Culture
  • Iberian & Latin American Language & Culture
  • Translation Studies

The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies at the University of Nottingham is also able to offer language training to suitably qualified candidates without the necessary language skills and to offer specialist supervision in the following areas relating to former Yugoslavia:

  • Byzantine history and culture
  • Balkan histories
  • Balkan representations
  • Contemporary cultural studies (Serbia, Croatian, Bosnia, Montenegro)
  • Literature and cinema (Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro)
  • Language and language politics (Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro)
  • Slovene culture

Eligibility

AHRC funding is open to all UK and EU students, who have gained an undergraduate degree (usually an Honours degree, such as a BA, BMus, BSc, LLB or equivalent) or be an undergraduate expecting to graduate prior to the studentship is being taken up.

If a student has gained, or is studying for, an undergraduate and/or Master’s-level degree outside the UK that is equivalent to a relevant UK degree, then they are eligible for AHRC funding. Must refer to the National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the UK (UK NARIC) to ascertain the equivalence of an overseas degree to a UK degree. Scholarships

A full-time studentship awards consist of three parts:

  • Payment of approved fees (as set and agreed by the Research Councils) – currently £3,900 p.a.
  • Maintenance grant (or stipend) for the student – currently £13,726 p.a.
  • Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) which includes UK / Overseas fieldwork and attendance at conferences

There are also other two kinds of studentships: part-time and fees only. A part-time studentship consists of:

  • Payment of approved pro-rata part-time fees.
  • A pro-rata maintenance grant @ 50% (stipend).
  • Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) which includes UK / Overseas fieldwork and attendance at conferences (by application only for current PhD students).

Application

The application procedure has three stages:

Stage one: apply for a place to study (deadline 9 January 2014) Make your application to your chosen M3C university using their own institutional application procedures:

Stage two: apply for funding (deadline 9 January 2014). Apply for funding through the M3C funding application form HERE.

Stage three: submit two references (deadline 14 January 2014). Two references must be received by the M3C University at which you wish to study. These must be submitted by your nominated referees.
