“Memory in the Digital Age” – Bergen-Belsen International Summer School

Deadline: 7 June 2015
Open to: international undergraduate students from different disciplines interested in the challenges of commemorative culture
Venue: 1 – 7 August 2015, Bergen-Belsen Memorial, Germany

Description

The Bergen-Belsen International Summer School “Memory in the Digital Age” has opened call for application for its 2nd year. The summer school offers lectures, guided tours, workshops and discussions held in English. Its aim is to develop visions for the future of educational work at museums and memorials. This year, the school will be focussing on issues of space, a topic which brings with it diverse approaches and perspectives. Participants will explore both the grounds of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial at the historical site of the Bergen-Belsen concentration and POW camps and of the Bergen-Hohne barracks, which were used as a concentration camp section for a short while and served as a Displaced Persons camp after the liberation. The groups will be working with and discussing the Memorial’s new tablet app, which places historical source material and documents in the spatial context of a 3-D model of the historical camp. Current academic concepts of space, authenticity and memory will serve as a basis for an examination of the historical site and the current manifestations of memorial culture at Bergen-Belsen and other concentration camp memorials. Projects such as the redesign of the Sobibór memorial and a multilateral collaborative research project on (digital) spatial dimensions of Holocaust historiography and historical learning will be presented by international speakers. Participants will talk to the founder of the “Central Council of Anti-Social Elements in Germany”, an artistic-political project which deals with past persecution and current marginalisation, and will do their own research. An excursion to the Bunker Valentin memorial in Bremen will open up new perspectives and mark the end of the summer school.
