Internship at the Open Society European Policy Institute in Brussels

Description

Twice a year, the Open Society European Policy Institute (OSEPI) provides opportunities for graduates to undertake an internship. The intern will be able to participate in conferences, seminars and events held by NGOs or EU institutions in the field of human rights and democracy thus contributing to the practical knowledge and experience of the intern.  The internship is for six months with the starting date in October 2015.

The intern’s main tasks will be related to providing support to the work of the Open Society European Policy Institute on EU’s policies related to fundamental rights, justice and home affairs, including non-discrimination and migration, although s/he will be asked to complete tasks in other areas as required. The successful candidate will work at OSEPI’s office in Brussels under the supervision of the Senior Policy Analyst, Fundamental Rights, Justice, and Home Affairs. The policy intern will provide support in:

  • Monitoring of EU policies and news in specific areas;
  • Assisting with desk research on these issues;
  • Preparing briefing notes, meeting reports and other factual and analytical documents;
  • Attending relevant meetings at EU institutions, organisations and other internal and external events/ conferences;
  • Assisting with forward planning/rolling advocacy calendar;
  • Updating the contacts databases;
  • Assisting with logistical or administrative tasks;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Eligibility

All candidates should meet following requirements:

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in the field of EU studies, international affairs or human rights;
  • A Masters level degree in EU and/or Human Rights law is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the EU institutional and legal  architecture for justice, home affairs and fundamental rights, including the Charter of fundamental rights, EU primary and secondary legislation is essential;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Experience in drafting policy documents and legal briefings;
  • Understanding of the functioning and policy context of the EU;
  • Experience within an NGO or international organisation is an asset;
  • Interest in the activities of the Open Society European Policy Institute office and the Open Society Foundations;
  • Computer literacy, with a good knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office;
  • Fluent spoken and written English required; knowledge of another EU languages is an asset (particularly French);
  • Attention to detail, good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills required.

Remuneration

The interns will receive monthly remuneration if not already enrolled in a scholarship programme or receiving a grant.
