Description
The Vilcek Foundation raises awareness of immigrant contributions in America and fosters appreciation of the arts and sciences. The foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. The mission was inspired by the couple’s respective careers in biomedical science and art history, as well as their personal experiences and appreciation for the opportunities offered to them as newcomers to the United States.
The foundation encourages scholarly interest and personal enjoyment of the collection by conducting original research, curating exhibitions, and lending objects to other institutions.
Eligible positions include the following: assistant or associate professor, research scientist, or equivalent. The applicant will be directly responsible for the design and execution of the work submitted for consideration.
Eligibility
- Be a naturalized citizen of the United States;
- Or be a permanent resident (green card holder) of the United States;
- Or be a holder of an H1B or O-1 visa and have been living and working in the United States for at least 5 years;
- Or have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA);
- Have been born outside the United States;
- Not be more than 38 years old as of December 31, 2016 (born on or after January 1, 1978);
- Have earned a doctoral degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent);
- Intend to pursue a professional career in the United States;
- Hold a full-time position at an academic institution or other organization;
- Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working under the supervision of a mentor are not eligible;
- Not be a past winner or finalist of the Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise.
Award
- All three winners will be considered equal in standing;
- Each prize includes a USD 50,000 unrestricted cash award;
- The winners will be invited to attend the Vilcek Foundation’s annual awards ceremony in New York City, in the spring of 2017;
- Travel expenses and accommodations will be covered by the foundation.
