The Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) is the hub for media and communication research at the Central European University (CEU), with a mission to advance media and communication scholarship in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The CMCS produces scholarly and practice-oriented research addressing academic, policy and civil society needs. CMCS research promotes pluralism, participation and the democratic potential of the media, and investigates the complexities of media and communication in transition.

The CMCS encourages applications for prospective Masters and PhD students at Central European University (CEU), specializing in media, information and communication policy, and political communication. Students may apply for financial aid packages at both the MA and PhD level.

CEU offers two opportunities for Master Degrees with specializations in media and communications, as well as a doctoral program:

1. Media, Information and Communications Policy Stream within the Master in Public Policy

Media, Information and Communications Policy Stream within the Master in Public Policy Department

The Department of Public Policy offers a one-year MA in Public Policy with an optional specialization in the field of media, information and communications policy. The stream provides students with a unique opportunity to specialize in a contemporary and dynamic field of public policy that exposes them to the widest possible range of key policy problems.

2. Political Communication certificate within the Master in Political Science

The Department of Political Science offers both one and two year MAs in Political Science with an optional specialization in political communication. This stream provides students with a unique opportunity to specialize in a fast-developing field of contemporary political science. They will seek a rigorous, systematic understanding and critical evaluation of how interactions between citizens and their political representatives are mediated by tools, personnel and infrastructures for mass communication and political campaigns. These techniques and agents of intermediation constitute an exciting landscape that is becoming ever more complex, diversified, interactive, user-oriented and customized thanks to the spread of new on- and offline technologies and innovations in political mobilization techniques and public opinion research.

3. Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations

The Doctoral Program is operated by the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations. Much of the student work in the doctoral program is centered on doctoral student workshops and departmental seminars, during which PhD candidates also have the opportunity to interact with visiting scholars from the most outstanding European and US universities. Students are encouraged as well to spend time in the field and at another university.
