The International Fulbright Science & Technology Award (Fulbright S&T), sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, enables exceptional foreign students to pursue Ph.D. level study at leading U.S. university programs and laboratories. Fulbright S&T demonstrates the United States’ commitment to welcoming emerging scientific leaders to pursue study and research at its institutions.

Eligibility

Fulbright S&T candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, cannot be currently studying or living in the United States, and are required to apply from their country of citizenship.  Like all Fulbright Program candidates, they must exhibit leadership ability and be willing to represent their culture in their host communities. Fulbright S&T Fellows must demonstrate special aptitude and innovation in scientific fields and return to their home countries after completion of their Ph.D. to make a contribution to society using the scientific knowledge that they have gained in the U.S.

Applicants to the S&T Program must plan to study in one of the following fields:

  • Aeronautics and Aeronautical Engineering
  • Agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only)*
  • Astronomy/Planetary Sciences
  • Biology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Energy
  • Engineering (aerospace, electrical, chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
  • Environmental Science/Engineering
  • Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Information Sciences/Engineering (engineering focus only; business-focused study is not eligible)
  • Materials Science/Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Neuroscience
  • Oceanography
  • Physics
  • Public Health (biostatistics or epidemiology)

Benefits

Fulbright S&T Award benefits include three years of Department of State funding with subsequent support to complete their Ph.D. provided by their U.S. host institution. During their Department of State sponsorship, S&T Fellows receive placement services, tuition, a housing allowance/stipend, book allowances, health/accident insurance coverage, international travel expenses, and J-visa sponsorship. Fulbright S&T also offers unique benefits such as an allowance that Fulbright S&T Fellows may use for approved research and lab materials, conference attendance (including appropriate international travel), and tailored enrichment activities.

Application Process

Interested students should contact the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in their country of citizenship to inquire about country-specific deadlines. Applications are accepted each year beginning in early February. Fulbright S&T Fellows are selected based on a rigorous multi-tiered, merit-based process with final selection by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
