The Intajour Fellowship Programme is a ten-month-long course called “Journalism in the Digital World”. It starts in late August and consists of attendance phases as well as e-learning phases.

The International Academy of Journalism is offering the 10-month ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ blended-learning training programme. As Intajour Fellows, journalists from around the world are given an opportunity to update their technical skills and discuss current media ethics issues.
By participating in the ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ programme, Fellows acquire skills in the following fields:

  • Investigative research on the internet
  • Journalistic forms of presentation on the internet
  • Technical production of web content
  • Media ethics: freedom and responsibility online
  • Economics of the web and entrepreneurial journalism

The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ programme is a blended-learning programme. It consists of five stages: three attendance phases in Germany and two e-learning phases. In the three study stays in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin, Fellows, supported by the teaching staff, intensively acquire new journalistic skills in lectures, practical group work, discussions and visits to innovative working newsrooms. These attendance phases are separated by two e-learning phases during which Fellows create journalistic products and participate in webinars and chats at home in their own familiar working and living environment. The e-learning phase requires an average time commitment of 7 hours a week. After the end of the course, Intajour will remain in close contact with its Fellows, through alumni services.

Eligibility

  • The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ programme is aimed at professional journalists from countries where there is a shortage of continued training of this kind.
  • Applicants will have demonstrated their journalistic talent as a member of an editorial team or as a freelance.
  • Applicants should be interested in the new technical opportunities for doing research and publishing on the Internet.
  • An understanding of the role of independent media in democratic societies is a given.
  • Intajour expects salaried editorial staff to be released for the duration of the attendance phases while continuing to be paid by their employer, and to receive appropriate support from them during the e-learning phases.
  • Freelance journalists should ensure that during their stay in Germany they are able to pay their ongoing costs in their home country, such as rent and maintenance of dependent family members, from their own financial reserves.
  • Applicants must be in possession of valid international travel documents.

Scholarship

Fellows receive a stipend from Intajour towards course fees and international travel costs. During the attendance phases Fellows are accommodated at Intajour’s expense in guesthouses or hotels and receive an adequate meals allowance.

Application

You can only apply to the International Academy of Journalism online. Unfortunately, applications sent by any other method cannot be considered. The interactive application form can be found HERE. Before completing it, please read these explanatory notes:

Make sure that the chosen course fits your needs. Please read carefully the description of the course in the “programmes” chapter. The form is divided into four sections. Please be sure to answer/complete/fill in every section of the online form. Incomplete forms will not be considered. Intajour can only accept applications if all sections are submitted completely filled out online.
In Section 2, “Personal Background”, you will be asked to write a 2500-3000 word ‘motivation essay’. Intajour recommends you prepare the essay thoroughly.

The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ course is aimed at freelance journalists and bloggers and full-time editorial staff. In section three, please only complete the field that applies to you. Please only provide addresses for your referees, rather than full letters of reference, at this point. Please inform the people concerned that you have designated them as referees. Intajour will then contact the referees. The designated persons may not be your employer or supervisor. Any other person who knows you well personally or professionally and can offer an assessment of you is acceptable.

In Section 4, you are asked for two documents that you should upload as ‘Word’ files: your full CV in tabular form and a letter either from your editor-in-chief or, if you are a freelance, a colleague who is in a good position to assess your journalistic work.

Upload your full CV in tabular form and a letter of recommendation. Full-time editorial staff should also attach a letter of confirmation from their supervisor that in the case of a successful application that they will be given permission to participate in the attendance phases while continuing to be paid, and that the editorial department will provide support in a manner customary for the company during the e-learning phase. Please remember to acknowledge and submit the declarations at the bottom of Section 4 by clicking the boxes.

You will receive an automatic notification after submitting the online application. Intajour will then contact you by another email after a few days following a preliminary review of your application.
