Description

The 2012 USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program will be built around creating a next-generation reporting tool for arts journalism in the form of a 15-member pop-up newsroom calledEngine30. The fellowship, funded by The Getty Foundation seeks to assemble an all-star team of fellows committed to using their skills to imagine and create new and innovative ways of reporting on arts and culture. The team will consist of arts journalists, webdesigners and developers. Anyone who fills one or more of these roles is eligible to apply. Most costs are covered by the fellowship, including air travel, hotel, transportation within the city and most meals. National and international applicants are welcome to apply, typically one to two of the fellows come from outside the United States.

Eligibility

The program is looking for fellows who fit into one or more of these categories:

  • ARTS JOURNALISTS who are committed to finding and telling stories in new ways, thinking about journalism as a dynamic system and process rather than a product, as well as those who care about finding better ways to engage with audiences.
  • DESIGNERS who are committed to thinking imaginatively about information architecture, user interaction, storytelling and visualization of multi-level data with design that is intuitive, simple and fun to use.
  • DEVELOPERS who are committed to imaginatively finding, adapting and integrating existing tools into Engine30 with a focus on ideas/intent behind what is developed rather than specific ways to realize them.

Other standard requirements:

  • All critics, reporters, writers, columnists, editors, broadcasters or producers who specialize in arts, culture or entertainment for an online, newspaper, magazine or broadcast media organizationMAY apply. Designers and developers, who preferably have some experience with journalism, are also eligible.
  • The program is NOT intended for entry-level journalists, students or journalism educators.
  • Staff, freelancers and self-employed journalists, designers and developers ARE welcome.
  • This is a NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL program, applicants from anywhere may apply. Typically one to two finalists come from outside the United States.
  • Advanced degrees or specialized training in the arts are NOT required.
  • If you have already participated in a USC Annenberg/Getty Fellowship, you may NOT apply. But we do welcome past applicants.
  • If you have participated as a fellow in a NEA Arts Journalism Institute, you MAY apply.

Fellowship

The fellowship, which will be held November 8-18, 2012, seeks to assemble an all-star team of arts journalists committed to using their skills to imagine and create new and innovative ways of reporting on arts and culture. The program covers most expenses, including: roundtrip travel to and from Los Angeles, hotel, most meals, reading materials, Internet access in hotel room and transportation within Los Angeles.

The  11th annual USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program fellowship will be held November 8-18, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA.

Electronic applications are now available for the 2012 fellowship as of June 12, 2012. Go to http://webform.uscannenberg.org/getty to submit an application, instructions are provided.

Do NOT submit any application material through email or postal mail, applications will only be accepted through the provided online form.

Important! If you have applied in previous years you are still required to submit a complete application. Past applicants are not automatically rolled over into the 2012 applicant pool.
