Description

SIGMA is an Erasmus Mundus Action 2 project within the European Commission scholarship programme Erasmus Mundus Action 2, Strand 1, Lot 6, Western Balkans – part of a wider programme that aims at promoting institutional cooperation and mobility between the EU and other parts of the world.

Within this scholarship programme, there are over 250 fully funded scholarships available:
→ for students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from the Western Balkans to visit one of the EU partner universities &
→ for students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from the EU partner universities to visit one of the partner universities in the Western Balkans

All fields of study are available according to partner universities’ offers

Who can apply?

  • Students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from universities in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo (as defined under UNSCR 1244/99), Montenegro, and Serbia (Target group 1, 2 or 3) who are nationals of one of these countries.
  • Students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from partner universities in the EU (Target group 1) who are nationals of the EU.
  • All applicants must have finished at least one year of university studies.
  • Applicants from the Western Balkans cannot have spent more than a total of 12 months over the last 5 years in one of the EU countries (doesn’t apply to staff & Target Group 3).

What does the scholarship cover?

Travel costs, insurance, tuition fee, fixed monthly scholarship to cover living expenses! Find more information about the scholarships HERE.

How to apply?

All interested candidates should first check which are the required documents HERE for undergraduate/master/PhD students and Post Doc’s and Staff respectively. All the documents should be in English or translated into English.

Application process | STEP BY STEP

  1. Open, totally ONLINE APPLICATION PROCESS, no printed documents should be sent
  2. Read the instructions very carefully
  3. Make sure you are eligible and decide which target group you belong to
  4. Check the offers of the partner universities and decide which university you will be applying to – you have 2 choices. Applicants from the Western Balkans can apply to the EU partner universities only, applicant from the EU partner universities can apply to the Western Balkans partner universities only.
  5. Make sure that you fulfill language and other requirements of the potential hosting university
  6. Collect the required documents, write motivation statement
  7. Make sure the documents are in English (or are translated into English) and the motivation statement is well-written
  8. Create an account
  9. Fill out the application form (you don’t need to fill it out and submit at one time)
  10. Upload the required documents
  11. Submit the application
  12. Make sure that you have received a confirmation by e-mail

  1. Do you need to be enrolled at some university of the eligible countries or you can just apply to study at the university of your choice that is given on the list?

  5. I graduated at Ss Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, and from what i see here partner from Macedonia is the University in Bitola. My question is is that a problem, i mean can i apply?

      There are different kinds of the scholarships of duration 1-20 months. For Academic and administrative staff: 1 month; Post-doctorates: 6 months; Doctorates: 6-20 months; Masters: 6 – 20 months; Undergraduates: 6-10 months. You can check details on the official website.

  9. Hi.I'm a student from Albania.I'm in the third year of the University of Arts in Tirana for graphic design,but I can't seem to find any university in EU which offers master exchange for graphic design.Can you please help me with some information? thank you.

      As for this scholarship, it is due to the universities included in the programme. You can consider checking other scholarships shared on our web and see whether you are eligible for something. There are other student-exchange scholarship opportunities shared as well.

  10. Dear Mladiinfo crew, I have a question regarding the eligibility. I have a Bachelor from University of Belgrade, Master in one EU country, and I want to apply for Phd programme within this scholarship, at the University of Warsaw. However, I have spent more than 12 months in one EU country (some 15 months, graduating a Master and doing traineeships). Can I apply anyway? How important is the '12 months' criteria?

      according to the rules of this program you are unfortunately not eligible to apply. But it is better to contact directly the SIGMA Team (contact address is mentioned above), maybe they can make an exception in your case. Good luck!

    I did obtain my bachelor degree in South East European University (Tetovo, Macedonia), which is not listed as a partner university. Am I still eligible for applying..

    Target group 1

    Students, researchers, academic and administrative staff registered at one of the Western Balkan or EU partner universities. Applies to: undergraduate, master, doctoral students, post doctorate, academic and administrative staff.

    Target group 2

    Nationals of one of the Western Balkan countries registered in a higher education institution not included in the SIGMA consortium, or having graduated from any higher education institution in the Western Balkans.

    Target group 3

    Nationals of one of the Western Balkan countries in particularly vulnerable situations*, e.g. for political or social reasons.

    * – Having refugee status or asylum beneficiaries, or
    – It can be proved that they have been the object of unjustified expulsion from university, or
    – Internally Displaced Persons

  15. Hello
    I have graduetd in South East Europen University In Macedoni so i Have mu diploma but I am from Kosovo Im not sure which target group do I belong,and why Im worried most is that I have Cambridhe diplomas but could this be accepted and mu languages of studies were 80% in English can I apply??

      According to the rules, if you have spent more than a total of 12 months over the last 5 years in one of the EU countries, unfortunately you are not eligible to apply.

Dear mladiinfo.com, I would like to know is there any age limitation for applying for sigma scholarship since I gradueted BA degree 8 years ago at Belgrade university and now I would like to apply for MA at Berlin universiti which is listed for humanities. Can graduated WB people over 30 years old apply?
