DW Akademie is committed to promoting diversity of opinion around the world. Media development, media training and journalism education programs are among the many services provided by Deutsche Welle’s training center. In today’s world, media and communications play a crucial role. They can inflame conflicts or defuse them. They can inform people or mislead them. They can serve as a mouthpiece for despots or give a voice to the voiceless.

They are offering an International Traineeship that will start in May 2014. Unusual linguistic abilities are the most important requirement for the international traineeship. The international traineeship is specially designed for young journalists from the regions to which Deutsche Welle broadcasts. Deutsche Welle trains its own young journalists for its programming in 30 languages.

At least one of following native languages is required for the training program starting in May 2014: Arabic, Bengali, English, Hausa, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese (for Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu.

The traineeship will last 18 months in Bonn, Germany. Trainees are reimbursed according to the following schedule, which adds up to EUR 27,524.52 for the whole 18-month period:

  • 1st six months: 1,442.98 € per month
  • 2nd six months: 1,531.03 € per month
  • 3rd six months: 1,613.41 € per month

The training program for International Trainees is divided up into three modules.

  1. Compact Seminars: In compact seminars, all international trainees receive basic journalism training. This includes, for example, an introduction to journalistic formats, research, presenting, news writing or press and media law.
  2. Practical Training: Here, the focus is on multimedia work in the main editorial departments. This training is supplemented with stints in all areas in which journalistic work is required.
  3. Knowledge of Germany: Trainees get to know the diversity of Germany, at the heart of Europe, through lectures, seminars and excursions.

Eligibility

Applicants for an international traineeship must fulfill special requirements:

  1. The applicant must be a “native speaker” in at least one of following languages: Arabic, Bengali, English, Hausa, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese (for Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu. They must have such a command of this language that they can carry out journalistic tasks confidently and competently. A very good working knowledge of German is also required, with the following certification: Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or TestDaf level TDN3 or DSH1. Prior notification will be provided as to which native languages are required for the training program.
  2. University degree or vocational training or comparable qualification through training and professional experience. German language certification Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or TestDaf level TDN3 or DSH1.
  3. Practical experience working as a journalist, freelance work, etc.

Application

Applications may be made online only at the registration website HERE by 30 June 2013. Written applications sent by mail will not be accepted.

The selection process for the International Traineeship comprises three rounds.

  • 1st Round: Approximately 100 applicants are chosen from the many candidates who applied online.
  • 2nd Round: These applicants must write a short report on a given topic within two weeks. Then the best of them will take part in a conference call to test their linguistic and communication skills – in both German and their respective native language. Prior notification will be provided as to which native languages are required for the training program.
  • 3rd Round: A few weeks later, approximately one-third of the applicants who submitted reports will be invited to the final round.
