Description

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights invites civil society organizations to nominate an individual or organization for the 2013 United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights. The prize will be awarded at an event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on10 December 2013, as part of the annual commemoration of the Human Rights Day.

The Prize was established by the General Assembly in 1966 and was awarded for the first time on 10 December 1968, the twentieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Prize has since been awarded in 1973, 1978, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008. It is an opportunity not only to give public recognition to the achievements of the awardees themselves, but also to send a clear message to human rights defenders the world over that the international community is grateful for,and supports, their tireless efforts to promote all human rights for all.

Eligibility

The prize is given to a group of five or more winners for “outstanding achievements in the field of human rights. It is given every 5 years. Nominations are received from Member States, specialized agencies and non-governmental organizations in consultative status and from other appropriate sources.

Nominations can be submitted on the form available through this link and should be received at the indicated email or postal address by 5 July 2013.

Prize

The physical token of the award is a metal plaque bearing the UN seal and an artistic design, and engraved with an appropriate citation. The UN’s awards are non-monetary in nature. The prize will be awarded at an event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on10 December 2013, as part of the annual commemoration of the Human Rights Day.
