Description

The Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation announces a policy paper competition for young researches and experts. The winners of this contest will be invited to participate in the 2nd Youth Kyiv Security Forum, which will be held on November 15-16, 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

The Youth Kyiv Security Forum (KSF – Y) is an initiative of the Open Ukraine Foundation, which aims at creation of a discussion platform for young experts from different countries on important issues of international relations and foreign policy. The main goals of the Forum are to empower the new generation by increasing their capacity to participate in policy analyses and policy development processes.

The Youth Forum is made possible through a partnership with regional Representative Office of Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine, with the support of The Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation (a project of German Marshall Fund, USA),Center of NATO Information and Documentation in Ukraine.

This year the topic of the Forum is “GOOD GOVERNANCE: WISDOM, SUSTAINABILITY, JUSTICE”. The concept of “good governance” often emerges as a model to compare ineffective economies or political bodies with viable economies and political bodies. The concept centers around the responsibility of governments and governing bodies to meet the needs of the masses as opposed to select groups in society.

The Forum will address the key role of good governance in building security – both national and international, will focus on the important elements of good governance and explore how practically good governance can be  developed from goal to condition.

POLICY PAPER TOPICS (optional):

  1. Good Governance – background for security?
  2. How good governance can erase corruption? Step by step action plan.
  3. Good governance: guidelines to promote economic growth.
  4. Rule of law within good governance as a challenge for democracy.
  5. Please identify the level of good governance in your country. Specify the pressing issues, problems and methods of setting it in.

Please note that this paper should be oriented on practical recommendations.

Participation in the Forum will provide young people with an opportunity to discuss current issues of the concept of good governance during an international conference, and to become active participants in workshops and training sessions, that will be scheduled in the Program of KSF – Y. The participants also will have a chance to communicate with leading experts, analysts from different countries, who are specialized on the issues of good governance in international relations.

Working languages of the Forum are English, Ukrainian.

Costs

The organizers will cover expenses during the Forum: for foreigners – for 15 winners – for 5 best paper authors – all expenses, including travel costs, for other 10 – accommodation and meals (travel costs should be paid by themselves), for Ukrainian participants – for 35 winners – accommodation (1 night – November 15 – 16) and travel expenses are covered.

Eligibility

Average age of participants is 23-35 years old. They encourage students of senior courses, PhD students, researches, representatives of youth and civil organizations, who are interested in issues of international relations, foreign policy and international security to participate in the Forum.

Application

The participants are asked to write structured policy paper. It must be up to 4000 symbols (with spaces) in English or Ukrainian and contain theoretical and practical approaches. One participant can choose only one topic. Additionally, please, send completed registration form. The deadline is 15 October 2013. The competition results will be announced after November 2013.
