Journalism for Future Challenges Program in Riga, Latvia

Description

Journalism for Future Challenges is a program for early career journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine who are looking to expand their investigative reporting skills, knowledge of international law and politics, as well as expand their professional network.

This intensive training program is taught by international experts from renowned newsrooms and it focuses on teaching cutting-edge, updated tools and methods for improved investigative journalism. The sessions will cover topics such as basic investigative reporting, planning and managing an investigative project, an overview of how organized crime and corruption works, personal security, advanced research on the internet, encrypting, source protection, ethics, and new social media as a platform for publicity.

The program will take place in Riga, Latvia in three separate modules:

Module 1: May 5 – May 9, 2014
Module 2: August 14 – August 16, 2014
Module 3: November 24 – November 28, 2014

Who Should Apply?

  • Early career journalists with a strong interest in investigative journalism (prior work in investigative journalism is not necessary, but some general journalism experience is required);
  • Residents or citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine;
  • Between 20 and 35 years of age;
  • Applicants should be fluent in English.

Up to 25 participants will be selected to participate, and all will be fully funded (more details on funding below).  Please note that there are limited places available, so apply early.

The Program Covers:

  • Travel and lodging;
  • Tuition and instructional materials;
  • Visa costs;
  • Coffee breaks, breakfast (at the hotel), lunches;
  • Opening and closing dinners for each module.

The funding is made possible through a grant from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Swedish support to the EU Eastern Partnership.

Application

To apply, please complete the APPLICATION FORM and in addition submit your CV and proof of citizenship or residency (in any form) in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine. Applicants may be asked for a Skype or phone interview. You may expand the boxes for additional space or use a blank page in case there isn’t sufficient room for your response on the form.
