2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War and its impact on the society today. To commemorate the anniversary, the Institute for Political and International Studies, the Institute of Collaboration for Integration and Development, and Club Alpbach Macedonia, are organizing a conference entitled The Balkans 100 Years After the Start of the First World War in Skopje, Macedonia. The conference will take place on 28 June 2014 in the South East European University – Skopje.

The main focuses of the conference are the Balkans, the slow Europeanization of the region, and the integration processes. 100 years after the WWI the Balkans are still in the central point of interest for European diplomacy and a source of numerous discussions in European scientific and political spheres. With this topic the conference aims at enlightening the past and offering a vision for the future of the region.

The organizers of the conference are welcoming papers with original research ideas, and strong theoretical and methodological approach dealing with the following topics:

  • the period of the WWI;
  • the continuation of the economic cooperation;
  • positive strategies in respect to cultural diversity and segregation;
  • collaboration and partnership for social security issues;
  • the role of USA, EU, and Russia in the present and future of the western Balkans;
  • the role of women during and after the War;
  • European integration in the region;
  • future vision for the region.

Eligibility

The call for papers is open to participants from the countries of the region: Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, and Bulgaria, as well as to international participants. Austria, England, Germany, USA, Poland, and Romania are the countries expected to participate in the Congress.

Costs

Accommodation, food and conference materials are provided for international participants.

Application

Organizers will accept 30 research proposals at most. Participants should submit a 300 word abstract in English to: conference.ispn@gmail.com. Languages of the conference will be Albanian, English and Macedonian. Abstracts should be submitted in Macedonian and English for participants from Macedonia and inAlbanian and English for participants from Albania. Research papers will be published in English after the conference.

Deadline for submissions is 15 May. Accepted research papers will be published in English after the conference.
