Grants for Supporting Investigative Reporting Projects

Deadline: 8 September, 2014 (5 PM Eastern Time)
Open to: international journalists
Grant:  5000 US $

Description

The Fund for Investigative Journalism’s Board of Directors meets three to four times each year to consider grant applications for investigative projects and books. The fund intends to support investigative journalism stories around the world. In partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Society of Environmental Journalists, the successful grantees will be available to also request a mentor. Mentor will be in the position to act as sounding boards and work with the grantees over the length of their projects. This is in alignment of the Fund’s program to support independent journalists.

Eligibility

The Fund accepts applications for projects on domestic (USA) and international issues. All entries must be written in English. The Board of Directors looks for stories that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance, or misuse of power – in the public and private sectors, respectively.

Journalists internationally can apply for the grant; as long as they provide a letter from an executive of a media outlet, committing to run the story – as long as it fulfills the proposal and meets the outlet’s journalistic standards.

Grant

The Fund encourages proposals written for ethnic media. Grants average $5,000 and cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel, document collection, and equipment rental. The Fund does not cover grantees’ salaries or equipment. The first half of the grant is given once an application is approved and the second half is paid when the project is complete.
