Description

The Institute of Molecular Biology is a newly established research centre, which is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, a charity with a long tradition in promoting outstanding research in medicine, biology, chemistry and pharmaceutical science.

The Institute of Molecular Biology is coordinating the International PhD Programme  “Dynamics of Gene Regulation, Epigenetics and DNA Damage Response, which gives talented and enthusiastic students the opportunity to undertake PhD research at the cutting edge of modern biology. IMB’s groups cover a broad range of expertise and include leading biochemists, geneticists, cell and developmental biologists who study the molecular mechanisms of embryonic development, ageing and disease; bioinformaticians and systems biologists who analyse high-throughput datasets and model regulatory gene networks; and applied physicists who develop ground breaking super-resolution microscopes. This range of expertise and the open and vibrant atmosphere within the Programme encourages multidisciplinary collaborations and innovative research. Moreover, a range of scientific and social events are organised to ensure high levels of exchange and collaboration between the participating groups, which are allocated at the:

  • Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB);
  • Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU);
  • University Medical Center (UMC);
  • Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P).

As a fellow of IMB’s International PhD Programme, your PhD research will be conducted within the lab of one of the participating groups. The Group Leader in whose lab you are based will act as your mentor and provide advice and guidance to ensure that you receive training in both the scientific skills and the creative and critical thinking abilities that you will need for your research and personal development as a scientist.

Eligibility

 In order to be eligible you must:

  • Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent with outstanding grades;
  • Have prior experience in a lab o a research environment;
  • Have strong communication skills in English(written and spoken).

Scholarship

All the PhD students will receive generous fully-funded scholarships.

When submitting your registration you will receive an email with a personalised link to the application form and your referees will receive a personalised link to the standard reference form and upload page. During the application process you will be asked to upload the following documents in PDF format:

  • Curriculum Vitae (max. size 1 MB)
  • A single file (max. size 3 MB) containing: High school certificate, University studies certificates, English Certificate ( if available).

The deadline to apply is 8 November 2014.  Shortlisted students will be invited to Mainz for interviews.
