Venue: 2-6 November 2015, Baku, Azerbaijan
Baku Autumn Environmental School (BAES) is a one-week certificate program for mid-career professionals in the environmental field held by ADA’s Caspian Center for Energy and Environment in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). BAES 2015 will be dedicated to “Integrating Ecosystem Services into Development Planning”, and will take place at ADA University on 2-6 November 2015.
Policy makers are often confronted with a set of multifaceted challenges in development planning processes. Projects and policies intended to meet development goals often go forward unwittingly at the expense of nature, e.g. a national plan to expand agriculture to increase food production may increase deforestation leading to soil erosion and flooding. The effects are felt by people who depend on nature for their livelihood and well-being. Recognizing the links between ecosystem services and development goals can make the difference between a successful strategy and one that fails due to unexamined consequences for an ecosystem service. A better ability to assess, describe and value benefits of ecosystem services, can help development planners to understand better how their actions depend on and change ecosystem services, to consider the trade-offs among options, and to choose policies that sustain such services.
All participants will learn:
- What are Ecosystem Services and why they are important;
- Analyzing environmental issues from an intersectoral perspective;
- Six essential steps to integrate ecosystem services into development planning and to implement change.
The environmental school is open to mid-level policy makers from governmental institutions, international organisations and similar from Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea region and beyond. Fluency in English is an important precondition to follow all presentations, read material and participate in discussions in English.
There is no admission fee, all costs will be covered by organizers. Guests from outside Azerbaijan can additionally apply for compensation of travel and accommodation costs.
